Top time management icebreaker activity

Instructions

  • At the start of the workshop, form into teams of 5 to 6 people.

  • Handout the task sheet (see suggested tasks below) in an envelope.

  • Let participants know that the aim is to score the highest number of points in the allocated time.

  • Let them know they will have 5 minutes to complete as many tasks as they can.

  • Say “go” and start the 5-minute timer. Call out when there is 2-minutes and then 1-minute to go.

Tasks

(1) Name your team (5 points) come up with a slogan (5 points)

(2) Make a paper airplane and fly it from one end of the room to the other (10 points)

(3) Sing a song together (20 points)

(4) Find out something unique about each member of your group (5 points)

(5) Convince a member of the other team to join your team (20 points)

(6) Do a lap around the room (5 points)

(7) Give each team member a nickname (5 points)

(8) Make a tower out of the materials owned by your group (10 points)

(9) Get everyone in the room to sign a single piece of paper (10 points)

(10) Form a conga line and conga from one end of the room to the other (5 points; 10 if someone joins in)

(11) Write a list of what your team wants to take away from the workshop (15 points)

(12) Count the number of pets owned by your group (10 points)

Note: You can customize this list as needed, Just make sure there is a point value assigned to each item.

Debrief

After 5-minutes, ask teams to tally-up how many points they scored. The maximum if you use the above tasks is 130 points. However, adjust this if you vary the tasks or scoring.

After the activity, discuss learning points. For example:

  • How did you decide what tasks to do? Some groups will move through the activity in order, and others will plan there approach, i.e. do the highest value tasks first. Which approach is better?

  • Did group dynamics come into play? If participants know each, they may feel more comfortable performing a task like singing a song.

  • From this activity, what are the lessons for time management? Link insight with course themes.
